Waiting & Afraid

Holy Saturday

“Holy Saturday” by Roxolana Luczakowsky Armstrong (b. 1938)

“When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews.”
-John 20.19

Secluded. Ears to the door. Eyes peering through every available portal. Praying. Waiting in dread. Fearing for their lives.

“We’re next,” one of them must have certainly uttered. “It is just a matter of time.”

Just like their rabbi, Jesus, they would be counted as blasphemers, traitors and conspirators against Caesar. And just as he was crucified, they soon would be put on public display as a warning to everybody about what happens when you cross the Powers-that-Be.

Disappointed. Distraught. Lost. Hope shattered. Dreams in shards. All prospects for the future…gone.

“What to we do now?”

And there is no answer.

This is Saturday. This is us…without Easter.
